Heavy Rescue Operations Training Guide

Pre-Training (Must be done before training starts)

  • People must have all uniforms ready before getting into server

  • Recruit should be able to find SOP and have it ready and open before training

  • Spawn one Heavy Rescue to go over truck

Standard Operating Procedure Training

  • Read through the SOP with recruits

  • Go over any questions they have about SOP

  • Go over Heavy Rescue truck/what's all on the truck

  • Verbally ask recruits questions to ensure they understand SOP

EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course)

Course:

  • Start Location: Station 2 (Paleto Bay) reference

  • Starts at Paleto Bay Station in Heavy Rescue

  • Drive to Station 5

  • Have them drive lights and sirens to the call

  • As a trainer, lead them in the Heavy Rescue showing that the course can be done.

HAZMAT:

* Location: Anywhere Instructor sees fit.

  • The instructor should explain the proper way to set up a decon corridor:

  • Explaining how to properly set up apparatus in a way to create a decontamination corridor.

  • Explain the proper PPE used in decontamination is the same level or 1 level below the Technician working in the hot zone.

  • Explain how the firefighter can identify any potential hazardous materials incident from afar using binoculars and the ERG to help identify any markings if its a vehicle or any markings on buildings.

  • Every Apparatus has an ERG in the glove compartment.

  • Explain that every Engine or Truck will have a HAZMAT PPE kit and a HAZMAT Mitigation kit that will have the tools in it to stop minor incidents and set up Decontamination.

  • Explain what indications could speak against a higher level of PPE (thermal influences on level A)

  • Explain the 3 D’s in a spill

  • Dam: try and stop the spill by building up a damn using kitty litter or a tarp

  • Dyke: stop the spill at the source by plugging the hole or fixing the crack.

  • Divert: use the kitty litter or saw dust to divert the flow of the spill elsewhere to an area that wouldn’t cause problems

Technical Rescue

MVA

  • Set up a vehicle accident on a major roadway

  • Explain the proper way to park an apparatus on the roadway

  • Make sure the recruits have the proper PPE for MVAs (minimum on a fire apparatus: Bunker Pants, helmet, and vest)

  • Go over possible ways to stabilize a vehicle:

  • Struts

  • Cribbing

  • Wench and cables

  • 42 jacks

  • Air bags

  • Have the Recruit(s) respond to an MVA and properly park their apparatus

  • Explain different methods of extraction

  • Crash rescue where you do only the most necessary to free the patient and get them out

  • Taking the roof off to differing extents to facilitate a rescue that is better for the spine

  • Using Ladders and Ropes/Hose lengths to stabilize a vehicle when unflipping it and smoothly set it down

  • Explain that it is beneficial to stabilize the vehicle with cribbing to avoid it moving around and damaging the patients spine

Rope Rescue

  • Set up your rope gear and show people how to set up

  • Do a scene where a person is over a steep hill and show them how to set up the lines on the truck and rappel down to person

  • Show how to put the person in the basket and strap down

  • Show how the pulley system works with rope rescue

  • Explain that going down is usually easier and generally more beneficial than going up, so it is preferred.

Swift Water

  • The instructor should explain the proper way to set up a swift water rescue

  • You want to find where the person is that needs help/stuck in the water

  • After this run through Procedure as stated in SOP

  • Set up your lines and get the swimmer ready

Search & Rescue

  • Establishing the Command Center

  • See what all units you have with you

  • Find the last area the person was at

  • Show how to start a search

  • How to call in that you found the person
